Case APL09-60. Specimen is a white margate, Haemulon album. TL = 184 mm.
The 1st dorsal fin spine is notably short, compared with normal specimen, APL09-14. The 2nd 3rd and 5th dorsal fin spines are absent. The proximal elements of the 6th and 7th pteryigophores are misshapened, with altered mineral opacity. The 9th proximal pteryigophore is more mineral opaque and mildly misshapen. Interestingly, the dorsal fin, posterior to the 4th fin spine, appears intact with contiguous membranous connection between the 4th and 6th spines, where the 5th dorsal fin spine is absent. This suggests that this is likely developmental and not associated with an acquired process (e.g., trauma, infectious, inflammatory). Compare with normal white margate radiograph.
